Born in May 1934 in Wuppertal, Germany, he was the first child of Alfred and Lotte Hilgenberg.

The family later moved to Obersdorf in the Allgäu. After leaving school Nikolaus did an apprenticeship as a chef in Bonn.

In the 1950s he moved to London, UK, where in 1960 he married Gene, born Wright from Buckinghamshire. In 1964 they and their son Timothy moved to Geretsried in Bavaria, Germany.

Back in Germany Nikolaus started working for Dr. TH Böhme where worked until his retirement in November 1997.

In early 1998 he suffered a stroke and after initial signs of improvement eventually succombed to it after an eighteen month struggle. He passed away peacefully lunchtime on Friday, June 11, 1999 in Höchstädt an der Donau in Germany.

Besides his son Timothy, he and Gene had another son: James and a daughter: Nicola who in turn have produced five grandchildren:
