Born in November 1936 in Richmond, near Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, England, Gene is the daughter of William and Hilda Wright. She has two older sisters, Jocye and June, an elder brother called Bernard, also known as Tim and a younger sister Helen. After leaving school, she spent many years working in the catering trade. In 1960 she married Nikolaus Hilgenberg with whom she had Timothy her first child in 1963. In 1964 she, Nikolaus and Timothy moved to Germany, where in due course she and Nikolause had two more children: James and Nicola.
For many years
she has been lovingly known as "Krümel" by her close family and
as "Nana" by her five grandchildren:
