Finally! We have managed to make a connection: Marie Jenkins, who recently found these pages and Linda Norton, who contacted me a while back, both former Hilgenbergs are long lost cousins! Let’s hope the momentum continues and we’ll get the whole family tree together one day.
Well, months nothing and then more news within days! Well Marie Jenkins has come up with some more details and it looks as if there might yet be a match… I’m waiting for news as I’m writing this.
Well some of the details from Marie are: The Hilgenbergs she knows of in Melsungen are (or were) Konrad, Heinrich, Willie, Annaliza (Konrad’s daughter), Kareen (a cousin), Ludwig and Marie. She also talks of some Hilgenbergs from Kassel, but can nolonger remember their names. The men were butchers, George Wilhelm, Marie’s father migrated to the US in 1905. Together with his wife Hedwig, he ran a restaurant in Allentown, Penna: The Well House Restaurant for 28 years!
It is a kitchen! Lots of new cupboards to hide in - but I have to time it well. They guys try and keep the doors closed, but you know me, sneaky!
I got a new bed today - it’s rather fab, round, low entry at the front. Curled up in it, it’s just the right size. Just the thing I needed as the weather turns colder!
The guy who appeared a few days ago has been coming in every day so far. The room at the top of the stairs has changed completely. First he built me a load of new nooks and crannies and then he covers them up.
I don’t think he quite gets how it works! The other people though seem very happy with what he’s been getting up to.
I have a suspicion that this room is turning into a kitchen…
The guys seem to have re-organised themselves. Rooms are now being used somewhat differently than they were a mere two weeks ago.
Today a new face appeared. A nice man spends the day with me. He’s staying in just one room - the one at the top of the stairs where one of the guys was sitting reading books and writing stuff on a computer just a few weeks ago.
He’s a nice chap!
